Today we are going to talk about five essentials that you need for picking out a safe home.

1. Pool safety.  While they are much more common in warmer climates, there are still homes in the Pacific Northwest with them. If you’re entertaining the idea of buying a home with a pool, make sure that there is the ability to put a fence around it or there is some way to keep animals and kids from getting in and getting hurt.

2. Fire zone safety. A lot of people dream of having a really cool or elaborate fire pit in the backyard for entertaining. However, kids and fire pits do not mix. If you do purchase a home with a fire pit, make sure it’s a safe distance away from play structures.

Pay close attention to what the traffic in front of the home is like.

3. Inspect parts of the home that appear aged. If there’s a wooden fence, deck, or retaining wall in the home you are looking at, make sure you do more than just take a casual glance. We find rotting wood more often that we’d like to say when inspecting homes. A new coat of paint won’t stop you from falling through a deck.

4. Landscaping liabilities. More often than not, there will be a tree or two in your backyard. It might be a good idea to contact an arborist for more information on how to trim the tree and how to properly maintain it so that it doesn't cause problems for you or your neighbors.

5. Curbing dangers. When you go to look at a home as a homebuyer, you’re probably only there for a half hour at most. A lot of people don’t pay attention to what happens in front of the home during that time. Many high-accident and high-traffic streets aren’t busy all day long, so make sure you’re asking your agent what the traffic is like on that street. We’d be happy to be the resource for the information for you.
